Hatori & his forgiveness!

♠️ Headcanon: Literally just a post about why Hatori is the best character. I joke around a lot about Hatori, but seriously, I legitimately love all of Fruits Basket (particularly the Mabudachi Trio) SO MUCH, it feels like my heart could explode. I talk a lot about loving Hatori’s grumpy face, but I genuinely think he’s a beautiful, kind, well-thought out character. He isn’t without faults, but he’s a good person to aspire to be. Hatori may be cold on the outside, but truthfully, he’s so kind-hearted and gentle. Hatori cares deeply about his family and protecting them, and he’s often demonized for things he desperately wishes he didn’t have to do. (The memory erasing!) He was pushed into a career and a life he didn’t want, but he’s never, ever complained, he takes it all in stride.

Hatori got rid of the only girl he ever truly loved, broke his own heart, just to protect her. He was genuinely so happy to know that Kana fell in love again and was getting married- think about how difficult that would be to deal with. Hatori is so strong. Despite Akito taking away his happiness and the vision in his left eye, he never blamed the God or held it against her. Hatori remains loyal to Shigure and Ayame, even going as far to disagree with every manipulative move Shigure makes, but he never stops him as he doesn’t want to intervene in his best friend’s plans.

Hatori even works hard to protect the younger cousins from having to deal with Ayame’s rather eccentric personality when they don’t want to be around it. Hatori often gives Ayame loving advice on how to fix his relationship with Yuki… Speaking of Yuki, Hatori seems to care for Yuki the most out of all the younger cousins. It seems to me that Hatori really identifies with Yuki, for multiple reasons that are too long for me to list right now, but… When Akito hurt Yuki’s eye at the banquet, it was Hatori who rushed to be by his side. Hatori was the one with him at the hospital. That entire scene just completely shatters my heart, Hatori was terrified. For once, he was watching what happened to him, happen to someone else… Someone who he was trying to protect.

He still never held it against Akito. Despite her constantly abusing him, when Akito was being verbally attacked by Ren, Hatori took her side in the argument and hugged the little God. We’re even shown that he used to carry her around, and felt like she was a little girl who needed to be protected. Even though he was forced into this job of being her caretaker, instead of hating her and resenting her (for more reasons than one), Hatori still cared for her. He cared for her very, very much. Not to mention, Hatori of all people, the king of ice, is often seen being the one to babysit Momiji. How sweet is that?

Hatori is an amazing man, he doesn’t get enough recognition. I could write a ten page essay on why he’s my favorite character, and why he is someone we should all strive to be, but I’ll stop here. I have a hard time expressing my emotions for the little dragon, he’s just so overwhelmingly brave, strong, and kind… I want everyone to appreciate that side of him, not just that he’s the token grumpy pants/stoic character in the manga.

Hatori & his memory erasing!

♠️ Headcanon: Just some thoughts and speculations on Hatori’s memory erasing trick, really.

So, Hatori’s memory erasing is very interesting and very elusive to me, it’s never truly explored or explained in the manga and I wish it was! It’s very odd to suddenly say that this grown man who turns into a seahorse when hugged can just erase your memories at a flick of his wrist, you know? To begin, I’m going to list the things we 100% know about his talent, the facts that are canon, then speculate on each a bit:

1) The memory erasing trick, according to Hatori, is nothing more than simple hypnosis. He isn’t magic or special in any way. This eludes to possibly ANYBODY being able to do this, but I suspect Hatori actually is special and he’s just being hard on himself/belittling himself and his talent. He’s not exactly the most confidant man, despite feigning being prideful.

2) Hatori’s father taught him how to erase memories, and the memory erasing trick is a special one handed down to each doctor in the family, no one else. This makes the doctors the “protectors” of the family and the curse. Not only do they heal the ill members of the zodiac, they also keep outsiders away by casting them out and erasing their knowledge of the curse.

3) It seems to cause immense pain to the person who’s receiving Hatori’s hypnosis, probably on par with a horrible migraine. I wonder, does this also hurt Hatori’s mind? Does he also get a headache, or does it burn his hand/fingertips? I’ve always speculated that it feels like a lightening bolt/strike or an electric shock on both the recipient and Hatori’s hand, he almost jerks it away because it seems like it burns, you know? That is purely opinion and headcanon, though. It worth noting that the recipients also seem to fall/fly backwards as soon as Hatori is finished, like they’re being zapped away from him. I hope after all this time, he’s learned to put a pillow/cushion behind them so they don’t get a concussion along with their forced memory loss.

4) We only see Hatori erase memories three times. Once with Yuki’s friends, once with Momiji’s mother, and once with Kana. However, he may have done it more often than that, but we aren’t shown it. As much as I want to joke around, I highly doubt he uses his skill for something as mundane as erasing peoples’ memories when he or another cousin does something embarrassing like tripping. It seems to be a ‘last resort’ kind of thing.

I believe erasing the memories of Yuki’s friends was his first time at erasing memories. Not only was he uncharacteristically overwhelmed emotionally by the experience, but also, he was just in high school. Hatori’s mother died when he was young, around nine or ten, and his father died when Hatori was in high school. (Both died from unspecified illnesses.) If Hatori’s father was still alive at the time, I’m positive he would’ve erased those kids’ memories instead of entrusting his young and inexperienced son to do it. However, because Hatori was the one do it, I can only assume it wasn’t long after his father died that young Yuki had the mishap, so Hatori stepped in for the very first time. Not only was this obviously traumatic for Hatori, as he finds this ‘trick’ cruel, but he was also probably still grieving his father at the time of the memory erasing. Poor dragon can’t catch a break.

5) Hatori hates this ‘talent’ of his and really despises having to use it. It obviously weighs heavily on his heart, whether it hurts him or not. He does not like hurting Yuki, Momiji, or any other family member that has to be erased from someone they care about. This is obvious, but I needed to state it again: Hatori does not like erasing memories. At all. He, of all people, knows how important memories are. On top of that, I’ve spoken numerous times about his depression and resentment towards his father forcing him into the role of the dragon, the family doctor, and the memory eraser/protector. There was A LOT put on Hatori’s shoulders from a very young age and it’s eluded to that he had a harsh, unaffectionate, unloving home life. He was under a lot of pressure, no wonder he hates his job.

6) This is something I’ve wondered about a lot: How far back can Hatori erase? We’re shown he can at least wipe out a few years, to just a few minutes, but how far can he really go? What about twenty years? I know that’s a stretch, but I just really want to see how capable he really is. Can Hatori SEE the memories he’s erasing from people? Hatori obviously closes his eyes once he’s wrapped his fingers around the forehead of the recipient, is he closing his eyes to concentrate, or is it to ‘see’ their memories? I feel like he has to be able to view their minds as sort of a film reel of memories, so he can pick and choose which ones need to go.

This upsets me. In trying to find those memories that need to be deleted, he’s possibly seeing the most intimate memories that person has, the things they keep inside and keep hidden, intimate things, horrific things… Perhaps seeing those private memories by accident is what causes him even more grief over erasing peoples’ memories? He feels terrible for seeing the things he really shouldn’t ever be allowed to see? Just a thought. However, if he is unable to ‘view’ their memories himself, then I wonder how he is able to pick and choose what needs to go. Hmm…

7) Just a small comment, how exactly is it considered hypnosis when all he does is touch your forehead? It’s not like he’s having them concentrate and pulling the typical hypnosis process, like waving a clock or pendant in front of them and counting backwards… But, whatever, okay.

8) The memory erasing is NOT permanent in the slightest! Exposure to whatever Hatori erased WILL cause those associated memories to come flooding back. With this in mind, I would like to again ask- why the HELL is Hatori dating Mayu? I’ve brought this up in an ask before, so I’ll post it here again:

“Even more so, Hatori’s memory erasing trick is temporary in a sense, as it’s mentioned multiple times that exposure to what he erased can make the memories come back. Kana being around Hatori (which would happen, if her best friend was dating him) would eventually cause Kana to remember everything. Think about how badly that would hurt Kana, the one he was trying to protect.”

Not only would Kana be hurt that Mayu was dating Hatori (as far as Kana can remember, she professed her attraction to him and he declined her offer) so, it would sting having your (ex)crush dating your best friend, but once Kana got over that, she would want to double date with Hatori/Mayu and her and her husband. (Which, as I said, WILL happen. Kana is Mayu’s best friend, of course Kana would be all up in Mayu’s relationship, especially when Mayu doesn’t seem to date often.) Once Kana remembers everything by exposure to Hatori, everything will come crashing down

Her relationship with her new husband would be ruined, Kana would be in immense amounts of pain, Mayu would be upset and confused, and Hatori would be in the middle of all of this. So, why? Why does he put himself in such a precarious position? Who knows. Back to the point, not only was Hatori sad for having to erase Yuki’s friends’ memories, but that also meant Yuki couldn’t see them anymore lest they remember what Hatori erased/what happened. Hatori felt terrible for taking Yuki away from his friends, it made him feel cruel like Akito, no doubt. So, the memory erasing is nowhere near permanent, and that’s actually a bit scary, and a bit of a relief. He just sort of… Blocks the memory temporarily. Hmm.

That’s all I have for now, I need to collect my thoughts and I’ll post about this more soon. Please feel free to add your commentary, I love hearing feedback on my headcanons and I adore discussing the little dragon!

♠️ Headcanon #10. Just some thoughts and speculations on Hatori’s memory erasing trick, really.

✖️1) The memory erasing trick, according to Hatori, is nothing more than simple hypnosis. He isn’t magic or special in any way. This eludes to possibly ANYBODY being able to do this, but I suspect Hatori actually is special and he’s just being hard on himself/belittling himself and his talent. ✖️2) Hatori’s father taught him how to erase memories, and the memory erasing trick is a special one handed down to each dragon, no one else. This makes the dragons the “protectors” of the family and the curse. Not only do they heal the ill members of the zodiac, they also keep outsiders away by casting them out and erasing their knowledge of the curse. I wonder why Hatori’s father was the previous dragon, while none of the other members seem to be related to the previous zodiac animal they are. IE, Shigure’s mother wasn’t the previous dog, Momiji’s mother or father weren’t the bunny, etc. The dragon curse seems to possess only Hatori’s immediate family bloodline. I wonder, was Hatori’s grandfather the dragon before his father? Has the dragon curse only stayed in Hatori’s family? Also, it’s mentioned that the new zodiac members are born after the previous one passes away- the previous dog dies, so Shigure is born with the curse attached to him now (“a new banquet begins” they say), however… Hatori was born while his father was very much alive. How odd. ANYWAYS, THAT IS A RANT FOR ANOTHER DAY. All of the dragons are the only ones who can erase memories.

✖️3) It seems to cause immense pain to the person who’s receiving Hatori’s hypnosis, probably on par with a horrible migraine. I wonder, does this also hurt Hatori’s mind?
